Fundamentals of Academic Writing

Lecturer: Madam Naga/Code: TSL024

For writing class, I did not do so well for my mid-terms. I overestimated what mark I would get by a long shot. Madam Naga says I have proficient language, perfect grammar and a distinct writing style however I have a little trouble with staying in the format guidelines. I’ll have to work on that. Since my paper is still with her, I’ll share my essay for the opinion-based writing assessment instead.

E-Learning is More Suitable For The Current Generation of Learners

By Farisya Azwar Binti Ridzuan

In an age where accessibility to Internet connection has provided a brand new “classroom without walls” style of education, e-learning befits the current generation better juxtaposed to  traditional classes in terms of convenience, effectivity and efficiency, as well as environmental-friendliness. With a tech savvy generation paving the way, it is the ideal learning medium for those gunning for high-quality yet accessible education.

One of the most prominent reasons behind e-learning being more suitable is the convenience it offers. Rather than commuting to a physical class or making time to consult the teacher of a particular subject, an individual is given the chance to learn anytime and anywhere depending on his or her preference. This is great news for students who are often faced with time constraints due to tight schedules as they do not have to rush anywhere for a lesson. The flexibility e-learning provides also means students can learn at their own pace. The freedom to choose when they partake in the online lessons mean they are able to accommodate it to their timetables and even continue to revisit the material multiple times so they make the most out of it. They are able to do so without it affecting other students like it would in a classroom setting. Hence, it is clear that the convenience factor that e-learning provides is testified.

Aside from that, e-learning increases the effectivity and efficiency of a lesson. By combining infographics, slides, videos, and such into a lesson, the curator  can assist students to truly grasp the topic. Statistically speaking, students digest and store information better when there are materials presented that can visually and audibly enhance their understanding. It would be costly to integrate the same learning aids in a traditional classroom, but through e-learning it is made accessible to all. Although some may argue that nothing can beat the tried and true conventional method of getting face to face feedback, the online way gives for a more precise evaluation of a certain student’s understanding on particular topics. Educators can track the progress of each student more meticulously than can be done in a traditional class. Hence, they are able to pinpoint where said student needs to brush up on. It is no wonder that the effectivity and efficiency aspect of e-learning makes it a go-to approach to education.

Another advantage more and more institutions are adopting their own e-learning system is that it is more environment-friendly. Since e-learning is done solely on a screen, it greatly minimizes the use of paper thus slowly diminishes the huge demand for trees to be cut down. This act has the potential to scale back the effects of climate change. Going paperless is a plus for the students too as they do not need to lug around heavy stacks of material to and fro for the sake of education. E-learning also does not require the physical transportation of an individual to a specific location in order for the lesson to be conducted. This reduction of daily commute can bring down the level of toxic emissions produced by vehicles. Although the impact e-learning has towards the environment seem miniscule, every act that contributes to the well-being of our planet is much appreciated by Mother Nature.

By all means, blending e-learning into education is definitely the way to go from here. It is a stellar product of the technological revolution we are witnessing today, and it is possible that every learning institution will introduce it into their systems in the near future.
